Posted by Jason as Rock Hounding Field Trips
This weeks field trip was to Wagontown Idaho for some agatized Petrified Wood. Well Wagontown is situated on the Idaho and Oregon boarder area of the Owyhee mountains just about 10 miles from Silver City.
To get to Wagontown take highway 95 about 30 miles south of Marsing Idaho. Then on the left hand side of the road will be a road named Cow Creek and you will take this road a good 10 miles. The road is not to bad except for last couple of miles once you turn off of Cow Creek a high clearance vehicle is recommended “Do not try to take a passenger car up here”.
This was one of the more interesting Petrified Wood digs that I had been on as the collecting area was situated at 5500 feet and in the forest. Most of the time I’m in the desert collecting petrified wood.
As soon as we arrived to Wagontown it was apparent we were here as there was petrified wood all over the ground and signs of fellow rockhounds. So the first thing a few of us did when we arrived was do what we always do, go the opposite direction of everybody else. The reason is it seems everybody else tends to go where previous rockhounds have dug I mean they jump in somebody else’s hole.
Well once we found a shady spot that looked as though it had never been dug up we set up shop. Within minutes of digging we were finding some very nice pieces of Agatized Petrified Wood. Some of this petrified wood kind of resembles Texas Spring Nevada limb cast “Beautiful stuff”.
My buddy Peter was digging about 10 feet from myself and I think he wanted to see the Olympics because he was digging to China. I set up shop next to a fellow club member Carl which him and I decided to dig one hole together. We were definitely not as serious as Peter when it came to digging. Peter by himself dug a hole at least twice as deep as Carl and I. Also Peter found the best specimens on the trip from what I could see. I guess it takes work to find the good stuff and Peter deserved every piece he found.
When Carl and I were digging one of use would pull out a large rock and the other would end up taking the pieces of the Petrified Wood out of the pit it actually was quite funny.
After about an hour good old John decided to come over and dig by Carl, Peter and I. John dug here for about an hour and decided to go down to check the creek out. By this time 90% of the other people pooped out and went home, so we had the place to ourselves. I decided to take a break from digging and headed over to the main pit were John was digging at. When I found John he was in a pit and a deep one at that.
After about 6 hours of digging it was time to say good bye to Wagontown and head home. This was a fun trip and if you like Petrified Wood you would really like this location since from what I saw the specimens are very nice and agatized. This trip on a scale of 1-10 would be a 7.

3Any clues about where to turn off of Cow Creek?
I’m using MapQuest and Google Earth.
If you have Google Earth, maybe you can write down and post the lat / long coordinates at the bottom left of the scren to zoom in to this point of turn off? (Google Earth is so good, you can actually see where folks have dug before - if you know where to zoom in that close).
Thanks,
Steve

4Steve,
The road you turn off of Cow Creek will be on the Left hand side of the road. There will be a place were about 5 or 6 cars can park on the right hand side of the road directly across from where you will turn. Also remember that you will be driving on Cow Creek for a good 10 to 12 miles. Also if you stop at the little parking lot I mentioned you will see the De Lamar mine for this location. Follow this road back a couple of miles until just before the road takes you down to the creek.
I will see if anybody has the GPS location if so I will email them to you.
Jason
You will see signs of where people have been digging for years some of the holes are big enough to park a few cars in.
