This post is going to show how with a few house hold items anybody can take beautiful pictures of there Thunder Eggs or any other rocks. This light tent was made in literally 10 minutes with the total cost of around $2 dollars. Compare this with the ones you see on eBay for a $100 dollars, and I bet you decide to make your own as the picture quality is absolutely no different.
The items that are needed for this light tent are as following:
Thats all there is nothing special just a few house hold items. If you do not have tissue paper, or poster board you should be able to find it at a dollar store.
Below are a list of pictures showing the progress of the light tent.
I cut the cardboard box and left about 1 inch of space around the edges of the box to be able to tape the tissue paper to the box.
The photo below is what your finished light tent should look like. It is not the prettiest thing in the world but it will work and save you a bundle of money. With the money you save it could pay for a day out rockhounding.
This picture shows a frontal view of the light box with a Thunder Egg in the process of being photographed. This light tent can be used outdoors using natural light, or you can use a couple of desk lamps indoors. If you want to use lights, experiment by using a light on the top or on either side of the box or on both side. Just experiment and find what works for you and that particular rock.
Well this is the whole reason for making this funky contraption the final picture of my Thunder Egg using my $2 dollar light tent. I think that the picture speaks for it self. So if you want some professional looking pictures of your rocks try this out.

1Backlighting slabs…
Here’s another tip…
Remember those light pegs that as a toy, you could buy? You put the plastic pegs into holes and made pictures. I got one from a yard sale for about $1.00. I replaced the peg hole face with plexiglass. I then covered this with white paper (simple 8 1/2 x 11). I could prop up slabs and this made a GREAT back light! Keep your eyes open for yard sales! Or, get one from the toy store.
