Grave Yard Point plume agate is on the menu for this trip. Yesterday was the perfect day for a late winter rock trip, the temp was around 55 and no wind. This trip I finally was able to get my wife and son to come along with a few friends as well. I had never collected at Grave Yard Point before so this was going to be a new experience. The collecting day began with us arriving at graveyard point around 10 am. We went to the top of a nearby hill and started our quest. It did not take long for us to realize we had to be on the money. The reason was about a half dozen open trenches were littered along the hill top.
For some reason everybody decided to go into the first trench and started surface collecting with a few of us actually digging. Tony within 10 minutes found a 5 inch thick seam of Plume Agate. Tony worked this seam the whole day and must have taken out 3 five gallon buckets worth with plenty of seam left in the ground. I totally forgot to take a picture of it so you are going to have to imagine it.
I also found a seam on the other side of the trench but the material was totally different. My seam was an opalite, jasper, agate mix pretty but not what I was really after. My son had a ball just digging in the dirt and throwing rocks all day. It was funny that he did not care what kind of rock went in the bucket, just as long as he put it in there himself. I think he brought enough rocks home that he will never need to take anymore of mine.
This trip to Graveyard point was more about getting out and letting my boy have some fun. I was not as serious as normal about collecting on this trip.
We stayed at Grave Yard Point until around 1:30 and decided to call it a day and take the wife and kid home. This was a fun trip and I would recommend it to anybody the likes Plume Agate and is willing to work for it.

1Sounds like fun! We recently picked up the remnants of a lapidary estate that my grandma had purchased. It was interesting but not as fun as finding your own. Still waiting for warmer days here in Pullman and the suspense is killing me!

Have you collected at Emerald Creek for Idaho Star Garnets? That is one trip that I have always wanted to do.

3Not yet. They recently changed the rules and regulations there and one of the changes was a closure from September on, but when they open on Memorial Day my wife and I will be the first in line!

4Can I ask how you drove to Graveyard Point?
I tried to go there last year from Homedale. Drove up towards the hill (hadn’t been there in years) and saw lots of houses in the area. Someone had barricaded the road.
I greatly appreciate detailed directions. I’d like to try again.
