Today was the first day of the Boise Idaho Gem and Mineral Society rock show for 2009. The doors opened at 10 a.m. and I arrived just a few minutes after. By 10:30 there must have been at least 300 people in the expo building. A few of the things that they offer for the kids is wheel of gems where kids can spin the wheel and win a prize. They also have the $1 grab bags which my son always wants at least one.
There is a very nice fluorescent mineral display that anybody that attends the show should checkout. Then there is my favorite thing about going to rock shows is the silent auctions. I managed to get a 2 lb piece of Biggs Jasper for .25 cents. I also won about 5 pieces of Owyhee Jasper which ended up being about 20 lb for $5 dollars can’t beat those deals. Oh and I almost forgot I won a piece of Willow Creek Jasper as well.
After my son and I played around at the silent auction we decided to start looking at what kind of slabs some of the dealers had. The first dealer I stopped at had some nice Bruenau Jasper but his prices were beyond expensive, for example a 3 x 3 slab of Bruneau Jasper with just a couple of orbs was $30 dollars.
So I moved on without even giving that vendor another look. The next vendor which I forgot his name but he had excellent material and at very reasonable prices. I picked up a very nice slab of Biggs Jasper for $5 dollars. Then we moved on to Larry Ridley’s tables for those of you out there Larry is the miner of the Willow Creek Jasper mine just outside of Eagle Idaho. I picked up a very nice slab of Willow Creek for $5 dollars that will make a couple of top notch cabochons.
I will not bore you with anymore of my rambling about my day at the show. Here are a few pictures of the displays at this years show.

1Hey Jason!
I actually was looking for you today after seeing your pic on this website the other day.
I arrived at about 10:15 and made the rounds with my son. Picked up several good Flourite Crystals and won a huge Obsidian specimen for 50 cents on the auction. My son also did a couple of turns at the “Garnet” dig. – This year they added “Green Emeralds” which were not real? -
I am working on getting my fathers faceting machine, he cut gems for several years, so I can start making gemstones. I tumble currently, but I am ready for a new challange.
Anyways, thanks for posting the pictures, and keeping your blog up to date!

Thanks for the comment. My buddy just rebuilt an old MDR faceting machine recently and I am hoping to learn to facet also.
I will be going back tomorrow morning to look around without having my 5 year old trying to grab everything in his reach off of the tables. I also wanted to talk with Phillip from http://www.rarerocksandgems.com. I should be there at 11 a.m. and I will be wearing my gray hat can’t miss me.
Thanks for the comment and I’m not sure if you go out collecting but if you do contact me through the contact form on this site and maybe get a small group together and get some rock!
