Ashwood Oregon’s famed Rockstock is kind of up in the air this year. I spoke today to Cathy Friend of Friends Ranch in Ashwood this afternoon and received some bad news. Darrel Friend which was one of the main organizers of Rockstock passed away on January 29, 2009. Cathy did mention that maybe a few of the ranches would open up but no definite answer as of yet.
Cathy wanted me to pass on this information that if you have any questions about 2009 Rockstock to contact Alex Mcdonald of Mcdonald’s ranch. Alex’s phone number is 1-(541)-489-3290. Cathy did mention that there would be no camping at the Friends ranch this year as well.
One last thing Cathy stated that the Friends Ranch may never be opened up to the public again, that it was up in the air. This will be a shame as a lot of the famous Thunder Egg beds are closing up or have been closed.
To end this post I would like to give my condolences to the Friend family and especially Cathy.

1Jason,
I just spoke with Alex and he confirmed that RockStock 2009 will be going on this year. I wasn’t on the phone with him all too long but he did mention it was Memorial Day weekend as it has been in the past? Anyways I have been meaning to ask you but the military has been keeping me busy. Do you know of any locations I can reach to dig for agates/geodes or thunder eggs by car? I took a trip back to my inlaws place back in Vale oregon My wifes grandparents have a HUGE piece of petrified wood on their property and there are several places around the town that appear to have fairly large obsidian deposits. Anyways I plan on Making a trip back there maybe around the first of May to hopefully find some nice pieces if you or anyone else would be interested just shoot me a post and we can make plans.
