This post is going to show how with a few house hold items anybody can take beautiful pictures of there Thunder Eggs or any other rocks. This light tent was made in literally 10 minutes with the total cost of around $2 dollars. Compare this with the ones you see on eBay for a $100 dollars, and I bet you decide to make your own as the picture quality is absolutely no different.

Well I finally mustered up the energy to photograph some of the beautiful Oregon Thunder Eggs that I collected at Richardsons Rock Ranch in Madras Oregon over Memorial Day weekend.

Saturday June 21 was the Owyhee Gem and Mineral Societies Jamieson Oregon Petrified Bog Wood field trip. For those of you that are not familiar with were Jamieson Oregon is it is about 30 miles north west of Ontario Oregon with the collection site about another 10 miles on a dirt road just north of Jamieson.
The day started kind of late for a field trip that was over a hundred miles away in my opinion. The club left O’Connor Field House in Caldwell Idaho at 7:50 a.m and headed to Vale Oregon to meet up with a few Ontario Oregon Gem Club members. After we finally had everybody in our convoy we were headed off to Jamieson Oregon.

Well for Fathers Day 2008 I decided that my family was going to Rabbit Springs Idaho to collect some fluorescent thundereggs. The day started off at a very early 4:30 a.m. so we could be to the collection site by early morning to beat the heat. From Boise Rabbit Springs is about 170 miles each way. It was a long drive but a very beautiful one at that. To get to Rabbit Springs you can take I84 to Twin Falls Idaho. After you get to Twin Falls you need to head south on highway 93 heading to Jackpot Nevada. Matter of fact Rabbit Springs is about 3.5 miles north of Jackpot on the left hand side of the highway.

This is my first attempt at making a Cabochon and the material is Biggs Oregon Blue Jasper. The slab was obtained from a local friend here in Eagle Idaho. Matter of fact Wayne sells on eBay under the name Rockhound Nuts and he currently has a few pieces of this beautiful material left not much though.
Back to the cab, I think I must have spent at least 2 hours making this darn thing. I thought that it would be a lot easier than it really was. After all of the hours making this Biggs Jasper Cab it really came out very nice. It actually looks better in person than in the picture. My friend Peter in the next couple of weeks is going to show me how to set this in a silver setting. I will post a article of the finished piece as soon as it is finished.
